ROLE OF DRY ICE IN SEAFOOD INDUSTRY

Carbon Dioxide posses varied inherent properties, which very much suit the seafood industry.

TRANSPORTATION OF SEAFOOD RAW MATERIAL USING DRY ICE & WET ICE COMBINATION

Seafood processing companies generally use wet ice to transport raw material from prawn farms / sea to the processing centers. In transportation wet ice and raw material is used in the ratio of 50 : 50.The wet ice is a dead weight, which adds additional weight to raw material.

Instead of using only wet ice, dry ice can be used in conjugate with wet ice.

ADVANTAGE OF USING DRY ICE & WET ICE

1. ATLEAST 1700 KG OR 1.7 TONNE MORE OF RAW MATERIAL IS CARRIED PER TRIP

Instead of 24 kg of raw material, when dry ice is used, we can carry 34 kg of raw material.

2. NO. OF TRIPS IN A YEAR COMES DOWN DRASTICALLY

With wet ice, a 11 tonne truck can carry 5.5 tonne of raw material per trip and it requires 336 trips to bring in 1501 tonnes of raw material.

Vis-a-vis, the same 11 tonne truck, using dry & wet ice combination, can carry 6.4 tonne of raw material per trip and it requires ONLY 239 TRIPS.

Hence, a company save 336 - 239 trips = 97 TRIPS IN A YEAR.

3. SAVINGS IN TRIPS IS A BIG SAVINGS

Assuming that per trip, atleast Rs. 6010 (running expenses) + Rs. 400 (incidental expenses) is spent, then the savings in 96 trips is equivalent to Rs. 6410 x 96 trips = Rs. 6,15,360.

4. DIRECT SAVINGS IN WET + DRY ICE COMBINATION

It has been calculated that usage of wet + dry ice combination results in the saving of Re.0.06 per kg. Hence for 1490 tonne, the saving is (Rs. 65 / tonne x 1490 tonne =) Rs. 96,850

In addition to these economical advantages, there are other tangible benefits arising out of usage of dry ice

DRY ICE FOR TRANSPORTATION OF FROZEN CARGO

  • Dry ice not only cools but also keeps the product & inside van – inert, neat & dry- no additional cost for anti- bacterial, cleaning.
  • Dry ice – International Grade for Food ( free from sulphur, hydrocarbon)
  • Anti – bacterial agent : dry ice inhibits growth of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. While handling , packing & transporting food.
  • Does not require sophisticated equipment.
  • Retains frozen seafood at desired temp. eventually retains flavour, shape, colour.
  • Seafood material looks fresh, extended shelf life, increased wt. Retention.
  • Frozen material requires a cold chain temperature of –18 deg c to –20 deg c for seafood transportation. Dry ice with freezing point of –78 deg c ensures the above cold temperature.
  • Dry ice increases the pay load.
  • Prevents oxidation
  • No need for expensive machinery. And no need for technical people to operate machineries.
  • Free from regular consumption of consumables.
  • Seepage of ice water into the body walls could be avoided. Dry ice has the tendency to convert itself into gas. Hence in the van it will not leave any liquid. Since there is no liquid the inner side is clean.
  • Protect the insulated system.
  • Since dry ice sublimates and gives out Co2 gas, there is no water or residue left behind. Hence after downloading the cargo, the inner side of the van does not require any further cleaning activities. Hence the down time is low.
  • Frozen quality is excellent
  • Product temp is same for the first row product as well as last row product
  • Entire system shuts down when the cleaning door accidentally opens

Advantage of Insulated Van against Refrigerated Van

Refrigerated van

  • Cost of van is greater than 17 lakhs
  • Must operate with AC OR DC
  • Refrigeration van operates its ac machine using diesel. Ac machine consumes 2.5 – 3.0 litres of diesel for every 24 hours.
  • Cost effective for full load
  • Service centers available only at town & cities.
  • More body weight, uncomfortable while driving.
  • No rented vans are available, have to posses own van.Chance of break down is high.
  • Alternative mode of transport is not possible, only refrigerant van should be used.

Insulated van

  • Cost will be less than 10 lakhs
  • No need of ac machine.
  • Diesel is consumed only by the van.
  • Cost effective even for partial load
  • Repair centers available even at small towns & cities.
  • Rented vans available easily, Less chance of break down
  • When emergency alternative mode of transportation can be used.
